Team History - History of GSE Racing

Record Breaking Season

2008 saw experienced rider Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne and rising star Leon Camier riding the Ducati 1098R for GSE Racing.

Shane Byrne stormed to the top of the championship table with outstanding performances in the first half of the season. He took race wins at each of the first 6 rounds of the BSB Championship, with double-wins at Oulton Park and Donington Park.

Snetterton was a particularly successful round for GSE Racing with Leon and Shane achieving a double one-two. Leon enjoyed the first BSB win of his career in race one, this was then to be followed by wins at Croft and Silverstone.

After building up such a substantial championship lead, the season continued to be dominated by Shakey and GSE Racing. Shane eventually secured the title at Silverstone with one round to go.

Shane’s season culminated in an impressive performance at Brands Hatch to take him over 100 points ahead of his nearest competitor in the Championship standings. Shane was delighted to close the season in style, and after the race said, “I don’t know if there are any words to describe how I am feeling right now. This weekend marked my final ride for the Airwaves Ducati team, my final ride at my home circuit, and my final ride in BSB so to come away with a double win is absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t be happier!”

With ten race wins and a further eleven podium finishes, Shane Byrne stormed to victory in the championship, whilst Leon posted an impressive three race wins and five podium finishes to go 5th overall.

A 4th BSB title in 2008 saw GSE Racing officially become the most successful team in British Superbike history. Team Manager Colin Wright said, “It has been a fantastic season for us, we started the year with new bikes, two new riders and different tyres to contend with. Obviously our goal was to win the championship but to be celebrating the win with everything new is a massive achievement for GSE Racing. We have won 4 British Championships in the last 10 years! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to this superb record.”
